The Chinese Olympic Baseball Team, who, with the cooperation of Major League Baseball (MLB), are touring the United States and playing exhibition games, went to western North America in mid-May to play some games against teams in the Golden Baseball League (*), the independent baseball league in the region, with an aim to strengthen the team.
The Chinese national team played two games against the Long Beach Armada in Long Beach, California on Saturday, May 17th and Sunday, May 18th. China came out strong in the first game, scoring four runs in the first inning behind a bases loaded triple by Feng Fei (Sichuan Dragons), and won the game 9-6. In the second game, China was shut down by former Major League pitcher (Arizona Diamondbacks etc.) Nick Bierbrodt and others for eight innings, but Feng Fei, the hero from the day before, singled in two runs for China in the top of the ninth, which raised his RBI total in the series to five. However, China lost the game 2-5 and the series ended in 1-1 split.
The Chinese team received cheers from the crowd at Blair Field, which is where the games were played, for enduring the earthquake that struck Sichuan, China on May 12nd. More than $6,000 in donations was raised during the two days, and it has been decided that the money raised will be donated to assist the earthquake victims.
Before the exhibition match with the Yuma Scorpions, belongs to GBL, at Desert Sun Stadium (Arizona) on Thursday, May 22, there was a moment of silence to honor the victims of the earthquake. Also, an autographed Chinese Team jersey was put on auction, which raised over $1,000 in donations. Team China won the game 6-3.
