【Chinese Baseball League Week 9 (Post season 1st Stage)】
Tigers and Eagles Swept at Home
On the Brink of Elimination
In week 9 of the 2007 Chinese Baseball League, the quarterfinals elimination series were well
underway. The Tianjin Lions, the winner of the Northern division, faced off against the Shanghai
Eagles in Shanghai, and the Guangdong Leopards, first in the south, squared off against the Beijing
Tigers. In a best of 5, first to three series format, the two games took place in the second place
teams’ home fields.

The Shanghai Eagles had the disadvantage of being the team with the
worst record, and the Tianjin Lions had the privilege of being the best.
Despite odds in their favor, the Lions had to deal with the Eagles’
homefield advantage in their first two contests.

In the Saturday game, Tianjin sent out veteran pitcher Su Changlong,
who for five innings displayed his prowess by silencing the Shanghai
bats. Tianjin scored two runs early in the game, and had a 4-1 victory
in the seventh, but broke the game wide open in the 8th, when
Shanghai put in relief pitcher Chen Haifeng. The Tianjin offense
pounced on Chen, scoring eight runs off him in the inning and one off
of reliever Yang Zhen. In the bottom of the 8th, Shanghai could only
mount a one run comeback, and Tianjin came off with a 12-3 victory.

In the Sunday game, Shanghai started strong, and carried a 5-4 lead
into the sixth. However, in the seventh, Tianjin sent ace Lv Jiangang to
the mound to silence the Tianjin bats. With four runs in the seventh,
Shanghai turned to their number one Zhang Li in the 8th, but it was too
late to stop the bleeding. Despite Wei Zonghai’s ninth inning homer, the
Shanghai team fell behind again, losing bitterly 6-11.

【Beijing area’s game scene③】
Beijing and Tianjin had similar records during the regular
season, and their head-to-head record was equal, so their face-off
this weekend became a focal point. In the first inning of the
Saturday game, the Beijing team jumped out with four hits and
three runs. However, their excitement over a Jia Yubing homerun
came a little too premature, and their offense fell asleep through
the next eight innings, as they only scraped together 5 more hits
and earned one more run. A slumbering defensive effort on the
field also hurt them, with two costly errors giving the Leopards
ample room to break open the score. By the ninth, the Tigers had
4 errors, and had given way to a 4-9 defensive slopfest, handing
the Leopards the victory and the momentum for the series.
In the Sunday game, Beijing failed to wake up from the previous
day’s breakdown, as four more errors in the field gave the
Leopards five unearned runs and handed them another victory,
this time 10-5. Beijing starting pitcher Li Hongrui, despite only
giving up one earned run, took the loss. Guangdong starter Zhao
Xuelin threw four strong innings of shutout ball, and combined
with three other pitchers on the day to preserve the Leopards lead.
With strong defense and teamwork behind him, Zhao earned the
victory, though the day seemed to be the product of every team
member’s hard work.
As both Beijing and Shanghai were swept at home, they must win three straight in order to win the
series and turn back the tables. Though Guangdong’s defensive monsoon and Tianjin’s ferocious
offense pose formidable obstacles, in the game of baseball, anything is possible.
